Major Characters
Daniel "Day" Altan Wing, June Iparis, Metias Iparis
Genre
Dystopia (Post Apocalyptic) Young Adult Novel, Fiction
Themes
1. Not everything is what it seems to be
2. Loyalty should lie in what is right
Symbols
Day represents the light in the people that are made out to be poor and monsters, while the Republic represents the greedy and selfish people in society.
Overall Mood
The reader throughout the story wants to not trust June, but is forced to because Day ends up trusting her. The reader will often find him/herself second guessing where June’s loyalty lies.
Overall Tone
The author loves to keep things upbeat and fast paced but also takes the necessary time to develop each character. Lu seems to want to make the reader guessing and also wants the reading to sympathize for the character to make the reader more involved and into the story.
Inspiration
Marie Lu was inspired between the conflict between Valjean and Javert in Les Miserables and wanted to recreate the conflict but in a teenager novel.
