June Iparis’ goal in life is now to
find and kill Day, the most wanted criminal in the Republic for the murder of
her brother, Metias, during a hospital break in. Day broke into the hospital after
he found out his brother had the Plague, a nasty disease that often leads to
death with a cure. Day left his pendant at the hospital, which is something that
carries a lot of sentimental value. June works with Commander Jameson and
Thomas, a friend of Metias, to capture Day. June, born into a wealthy family,
decides to pose as a girl from the slums to locate Day. June gets injured in a
Skiz fight with a bartender named Kaede. Afterwards Day and Tess, his partner
in crime, help June with her wounds. June is unaware that Day is helping her,
because the Republic doesn’t know what he looks like and names haven’t been
exchanged. June starts to fall for this boy, saying to herself that he’s the
most beautiful boy she’s ever seen.
On one night, June and Day kiss, and really begin to fall for each other. Day, the guy to get girls easily, realizes that she (June), is different, in a good way. But a few nights after, June sees a movement that Day makes as he falls asleep, an involuntary movement to grab a necklace, or pendant. June sees Day leave the area that they have been sleeping in and follows him. Day makes his way to the outskirts of a small town and watches his home where he can see Eden, his younger brother who’s infected with the plague, start to do worse. June connects the dots, and realizes the boy she has started to fall for is Day. June calls then calls Thomas to turn Day in believing that what she is doing is right. The next morning military trucks and medical trucks rush to Day’s house. Da reaches the house but sees his mother get executed by Thomas to get Day to give up and turn himself in. June, furious with Thomas for killing his mother, tries to make sure no one else gets hurt but Thomas ends up shooting day in the leg.
When June returns home, Thomas starts to pursue June as a love interest. Day is interviewed by June, Commander Jameson and Thomas. Thomas ends up setting an execution date for Day but as June and Day talk more, they become closer and begin to understand each other more. June says that she never wanted anyone to get hurt, because she knows the pain of losing someone close. June decides to look up Day’s real identity, which is Daniel Altan Wing, who also scored a perfect score on his Trials test. Except he was experimented on and left for the dead while June became famous and wealthy. June decides to interview Day again, telling him that he got a perfect score on the Trials test. Day keeps insisting that he didn’t kill Metias because e threw the knife at his shoulder, not the heart but June, disregarding what he just said, decides to ask Day how he got is limp and his imperfection in the eye. Day explains that he got each of those things from the Republic after he “failed” the Trials test and was experimented on and left to die in the basement of a hospital.

June, confused on why Day keeps on insisting that he didn’t kill Metias, decides to look closer at the pictures of Metias’ death scene. She realizes that the photos have been angled to hide the shoulder wound and to only show the stab wound in the heart. June then begins to read Metias’ journal and decodes a URL left for her. The URL contains a conspiracy that their parents were killed when the found out that the Republic is engineered and used as a weapon to fight the colonies. June seeks out Kaede, the bartender she got into a fight with, because after looking at Patriot files, found that Kaede was a Patriot. She asks the Patriots for help and also supplies Kaede with a lot of money. The Patriots decide to help Day and his family on his execution date. The patriots help Day escape, but John sacrifices himself because he looked like Day to stop their pursuers.
