The first theme is that not everything is what it seems to
be. “You think the Republic is intentionally poising people? Day, you’re on dangerous
ground” (202.) Day believes the Republic are poisoning people, but June doesn’t
believe. Why would a great nation such as the Republic poison people? June
would never believe that the Republic would do that to their citizens. She was
raised under the impression that the Republic is good, and the Colonies are bad
and has had no other reason to think otherwise. “June, the only labor camps are
the morgues in the hospital basements” (204.) Day also knows that when a child
fails the Trials test they are experimented on and then killed. But Da survived
and knows the truth. But the good and gracious Republic would never do that.
June has no reason to think the Republic would kill children after failing a
test June is still under the perception that the Republic is good. “The plague
murdered my parents. The plague infected Day’s brother. It killed Metias for
uncovering the truth of it all. It took from me the people I love. And behind
the plague is the Republic itself. The country I used to be proud of” (250.) June
finally uncovers the truth that not everything is what it seems to be. June now
knows that Republic kills kids that fail the Trials, infect innocent people
with the plague to see how it spreads with humans to use for war, and that the Republic
killed her parents. June now has every reason to believe ay and to hate the Republic.
The second theme is that loyalty should lay in what is right, not what is better. “I’m going to help Day escape” (251.) June finds out that day is right and wants to help Day escape his imprisonment. She sides with what is right, not what is easier or better. June isn’t like the rest of the Republic, she isn’t corrupt and greedy. “Don’t try it again, she says, because you won’t be able to do it without my help.” (257.) June tells Day that she’s going to help him, risk her easy going life for one of a criminals. June makes a crucial decision in helping Day, but realizes that it’s the right thing to do. “You’re living a sweet life, you know. Tucked in a cozy apartment in some rich sector” (266.) June sacrifices everything she has to help Day, her money, her reputation, and her easy way of life, to help the most wanted criminal. June is loyal to the right cause, which is the cause that everyone should be loyal too.
