Legend in Marie Lu has become a “legend”
in my limited number of books I’ve read in my entire life. I’d give this book a
4 out of 5. I would recommend this book to anybody who liked the Hunger Games. The book follows a Hunger Games type of feel where there is conflicting loves interests but also a lot of action and suspense. The most unique thing about this book is the different views after
each chapter. After every chapter, the point of view changes from either Day to
June, or June to Day. This style of writing adds a sense of exposition, during
some of the chapters, making this almost like a movie. The switching first person
views throughout the story also adds dramatic irony between Day and June. Lu develops
each character well and also paces the story very well. The switching views
after each chapters adds more suspense as well.
Lu also finds ways to make each character seem like an actual person, not just some character in a book. Each character has a story behind them, making them more relatable and more likable. The dystopian society is a bit hard to imagine though because Lu tends to focus more on the characters. There wasn’t a clear picture in my head on what the Republic looked like. I also felt like the romance was rushed between the two characters but besides these small gripes, this book is very good. A novel with action and a conflicting love story seems to be the appeal to many readers right now.
